Last Sunday at Dutton's a father asked me to help his son find a book for a report he had to do for school. The assignment was pretty open but the father told me it only couldn't be To kill a mocking bird. When I asked why not, the father told me because it mentions rape. I could not believe this. What kind of ridiculous, moronic teacher must this kid have. I don't necessarily love To kill a mocking bird but I at least recognize it as a classic. This is supposed to be a teacher, exposing things to kids in a safe way so they can be prepared for the real world, not some fascist censor. Well it didn't stop me from finding the kid an appropriate book, I sent him home with another classic, Sabatini's Captain Blood. I hope the teacher enjoys that report.
